Contest Information
Design Conference
  • Date: May 12-15, 2011
  • Location: University of Toronto, St. George Campus
  • Registration deadline: Monday, February 7, 2011

Contestants attend a four-day conference where they present their final designs before a panel of judges to compete for the winning design proposal. In addition to the Design Fair, contestants take part in tours of leading aerospace facilities lo¬cated in Toronto and interact with likeminded students from across the country during various social activities. Additionally, the conference will include various seminars given by prominent figures in space engineering research. Please see below for an approximate conference itinerary.

Day One: Welcome & Design Challenges
  • UTSDC proudly welcomes high school students to U of T
  • Students attend a lecture from a prominent figure in the aerospace industry
  • Students participate in short design challenges

Day Two: Tours & Activities
Students attend the following potential tours:
  • U of T Institute for Aerospace Studies
  • Canadian Air and Space Museum
Students participate in the following potential activities:
  • Building & launching model rockets, egg lander challenge, or other engineering design activities
  • Night sky gazing activity

Day Three: Design Fair
  • UTSDC brings together the teams for the final stage of the contest: the display fair and formal presentation
  • In the evening, students relax with an active outdoor activity or movie night

Day Four: Awards Ceremony
  • The UTSDC conference concludes with an Awards Ceremony where teams are awarded for their designs and quality of their proposals


Report and Presentation

The report you submit should be approximately 10 pages, and no more than 20 pages long. Diagrams are encouraged along with relevant calculations. The more viable and thought out your design is, the better. For more information on report formatting, please see the contest information page.

Judging

Three panels of judges will evaluate each team. The first panel consists of faculty, professors and alumni who have a background in relevant fields. They will mainly critique the technical merit of the design. The second panel is multidisciplinary group of undergraduate students, and the third panel will be representatives from the business community. Judges will be evaluating teams based on, but not limited to the creativity of the design, technical merit, artistic merit, presentation and communication.

Prizes

Competing teams will be divided into 2 categories - junior teams (grades 9 & 10) and senior teams (grades 11 & 12). Each of the division will compete with other teams of the same division for the following prizes:

  • First Place (by overall score)
  • Second Place (by overall score)
  • Third Place (by overall score)

Teams from both division will also compete with each other for the following prizes:

  • Best Presentation
  • Best Display
  • Best Design

Every participating team will also receive a certificate of participation.

Parents/Staff Advisor

We welcome any parent or staff advisor that wish to stay in residence with their child or team. Please send us a detailed email message, and we will provide information regarding overnight room bookings with the summer residence program at the University of Toronto.
